The quality of the clean is determined by the equipment and products used. Using the wrong products in a data centre environment damages equipment, redistributes contamination, and creates ESD risk. Here is what we use and why.

Why the right tools matter

General-purpose cleaning equipment and products are not suitable for data centre environments or electronic equipment. Compressed air redistributes contamination. Solvent-based products damage plastics and anti-glare coatings. Vacuum cleaners without HEPA filters exhaust fine particles back into the room. Static-generating cloths and tools create ESD risk that can damage sensitive components.

Every item of equipment and every product used by Priority Data Services is selected specifically for use in environments containing sensitive electronic equipment. Nothing we introduce to a data centre or equipment room creates additional risk to the assets within it.

PacVac Superpro
Micron 700

The PacVac Superpro Micron 700 is a four-stage HEPA vacuum designed for chemical laboratories, high-tech laboratories, hazardous particulate situations such as asbestos abatement, and infection-control hospital wards. It captures 99.995% of particles at 0.3 micron. This is the same standard required to safely remove zinc whiskers and other fine contamination from data centre environments without exhausting particles back into the room.

Antistatic
Microfibre

Microfibre cloths, mop pads, and wands attract and trap particles rather than redistributing them. Studies show microfibre reduces surface bacteria by 99%, compared to 33% for conventional cleaning materials. We use different coloured microfibre for different surfaces and equipment types to prevent cross-contamination. Microfibre is machine-washable and reused rather than disposed of, reducing waste on every job.

Antistatic
Cleaning Solution

Antistatic cleaner eliminates static charge on treated surfaces and reduces the rate at which dust and fine particles are attracted back to those surfaces after cleaning. Using standard cleaning products in a data centre environment generates static charge on plastic surfaces that actively attracts the contamination you are trying to remove. Antistatic solution breaks this cycle.

ESD Protection
Equipment

ESD wrist straps, foot straps, antistatic mats, and ESD-safe containers are used during all internal equipment decontamination work. Electrostatic discharge is an invisible risk to sensitive electronic components. Our technicians are trained in ESD protocols and follow them consistently throughout any work involving open equipment or handling of electronic assemblies.

Control Products

Sticky mats at facility entry points capture contamination from footwear before it is tracked into clean areas. We deploy sticky mats as part of our setup for data centre decontamination work, and we can provide sticky mat stations as a permanent contamination control measure for facilities that want to reduce ongoing ingress. Shoe covers and personal protective equipment complete the contamination control picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEPA filter and why does it matter in a data centre?

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. A true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, which is the most penetrating particle size. The PacVac Superpro Micron 700 we use is rated at 99.995% at 0.3 microns, which exceeds the standard. This matters in a data centre because if you vacuum contamination and your vacuum does not have a HEPA filter, it exhausts those particles back into the room. Standard vacuum cleaners do this. You are moving contamination, not removing it.

Can you supply sticky mats for permanent installation?

Yes. We can supply and install sticky mat stations at data centre and communications room entry points as a permanent contamination reduction measure. Sticky mats are one of the most cost-effective contamination control products available and should be in place at every facility entry point where footwear contamination is a concern.

Why use microfibre instead of regular cloths?

Microfibre has a much higher surface area than conventional cleaning materials, which means it traps particles rather than pushing them around. It also generates much lower static charge than synthetic conventional cloths, which is important in environments containing sensitive electronics. Do you use any compressed air in your process?

No. Compressed air redistribution of contamination is a standard problem in data centres where in-house staff attempt maintenance cleaning. Compressed air removes contamination from one surface and blows it onto adjacent surfaces, into the ambient air, and into the cooling airflow of equipment. We use HEPA vacuuming and microfibre exclusively. Contamination is captured and removed, not moved.

Can I purchase the products you use for in-house maintenance between visits?

Yes. We can advise on appropriate products for your in-house maintenance team to use between professional visits. This is actually encouraged, because maintaining basic standards between professional decontaminations reduces the contamination load that accumulates and makes each professional visit more effective.
