Internal server & equipment decontamination.

Fan-assisted cooling pulls airborne particles into your equipment constantly. Those particles settle on heatsinks, circuit boards, power supplies, and fan blades. The result is overheating, reduced component life, and eventual failure.

The problem with fan-cooled equipment

Most electronic equipment relies on fan-assisted airflow for cooling. The same airflow that keeps components cool also draws airborne contamination inside the chassis. Over months and years, particulate builds up on every internal surface: heatsinks, fan blades, power supply internals, circuit boards, and the cases themselves.

Contamination on heatsinks dramatically reduces thermal transfer efficiency. The fan works harder, the component runs hotter, and thermal throttling or failure becomes a real probability. Power supply contamination is a direct fire risk in some environments. Circuit board contamination can cause tracking faults and intermittent failures that are difficult to diagnose without knowing the cleaning history of the equipment.

Professional internal decontamination removes built-up contamination before it causes failures. We work within live facilities where required, using HEPA-filtered equipment exclusively. Contamination is captured, not redistributed.

What we address internally

Every contamination accumulation point inside your equipment.

01

Server and
Blade Chassis

Rack servers, blade chassis, and storage arrays accumulate significant particulate load inside the chassis cavity. We vacuum and wipe all accessible internal surfaces, fan assemblies, and card slots. Equipment is handled in accordance with ESD protocols throughout.

Primary server assets
02

Heatsinks and
Fan Assemblies

Heatsinks are the highest-priority surface in any internal decontamination. Contamination embedded between heatsink fins insulates rather than conducts, causing direct thermal performance loss. Fan assemblies with contaminated blades become imbalanced and acoustically louder over time, indicating reduced flow efficiency before complete failure.

Thermal performance
03

Power Supply
Internals

Power supply units draw significant airflow through the unit. This makes them high-contamination environments. Accumulated particulate on PSU internals presents a fire risk in extreme cases and contributes to thermal issues in the unit itself. Where PSUs are accessible, we clean internally as part of the decontamination scope.

04

Circuit Board
Surfaces

Motherboards, PCBs, and daughterboards accumulate fine particulate that can cause tracking faults at high voltage or humidity. We use antistatic microfibre and approved antistatic solutions to clean board surfaces accessible within the chassis. We do not use compressed air or solvent-based products on live equipment.

  1. A

    Assessment

We assess the contamination load on each item before starting work. Equipment that requires specialist handling, has open damage, or presents warranty concerns is noted for your authorised representative before any work proceeds.

  2. B

    ESD Protection

All technicians wear ESD wrist straps and use ESD-safe tools and containers throughout the internal decontamination process. Antistatic mats are deployed where required.

  3. C

    HEPA Extraction

Internal surfaces are vacuumed with HEPA-filtered equipment. We do not use compressed air, which merely redistributes contamination to other surfaces or into the ambient environment. All captured material is removed from the facility.

  4. D

    Sign-Off

Each item is inspected on completion. Your authorised representative signs off the completed scope. A job report documents the work performed and any conditions observed during the clean.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just use compressed air?

Compressed air redistributes contamination. It blows particulate off heatsinks and boards and into the ambient air of the room, where it settles on other equipment or is drawn back in through the same cooling fans. HEPA vacuuming captures and removes the contamination from the environment entirely.

Can you clean equipment that is still in service?

Yes. We can work around scheduled maintenance windows, or during non-peak periods. For equipment that cannot be taken offline, we can often address external vents, accessible fan assemblies, and surrounding surfaces without powering down. Full internal decontamination requires the equipment to be offline.

How often should internal decontamination be scheduled?

This depends on the contamination load in your facility. Data centres with poorly managed subfloor or ceiling void contamination will require more frequent internal cleans because the source problem is continuously introducing new particulate. Addressing the source contamination through a data centre decontamination program reduces internal clean frequency.

What happens to the warranty if you open our equipment?

We can advise on this before work begins. For equipment still under warranty, we work within access that does not require opening sealed units, or we coordinate with your equipment vendor. Any access that may affect warranty conditions is flagged to your authorised representative for approval before we proceed.

Can you do a before-and-after report for asset management purposes?

Yes. Photographic documentation of each item before and after decontamination is available as part of the job report. This gives you a formal record for asset management, insurance, and procurement decisions.

When did you last clean inside?

Schedule Internal Decontamination

If your equipment has not had an internal clean in the last 12 months and is operating in a facility with any subfloor or ceiling void contamination, the inside of your chassis is carrying a load. Contact us to assess scope and schedule.
